At least two 3.5-inch Macintosh diskettes

Goals and Objectives --

Learn basics of the C language and how to compile C on the Macintosh using the Metrowerks Codewarrior Compiler.

Learn to use electronic mail.

Learn to use a word processor (using ClarisWorks).

Learn elementary procedures for using a spreadsheet (using ClarisWorks).

Learn how to access information on the World Wide Web (using Netscape).

Discuss Societal impact of computing, including ethical issues.

Outline of the Course

Introduction to comput4er programming and its use in solving problems, intended primarily for technical majors. Basic instruction in programming techniques is combined with tools use and discussions of ethical issues arising from the impact of computing on society.

Aug. 23: Overview of class operation
Aug. 26-30: Chapters 2, 3, 4, and begin 5
Sept. 2-6: Introduction to word processing using ClarisWorks
Finish Chapter 5 and begin Chapter 6

Sept. 18-20: Begin Chapter 7 and introduction to spreadsheets using ClarisWorks
Sept. 23 - 28: Chapter 7
Sept. 30-Oct. 4: Chapter 8
Oct. 7-11: Chapter 8 and Societal Issues
Monday, Oct. 14: Hour Quiz 2

Oct 16-18: Begin Chapter 9
Oct. 21-25: Chapter 9 and Societal Issues
Oct. 28-Nov. 1: Finish Chapter 9 and begin Chapter 10

Monday, Nov. 4: Fall Break

Nov. 6-8: Finish Chapter 10 and begin Chapter 11
