Freescale's highly integrated, cost-effective MPC5200 is
well suited for networking, media, industrial control, and
automotive applications. It delivers 760 MIPS with a Floating
Point Unit (FPU), is packed with I/O, and operates at only one
watt. The MPC5200 serves the processing-intensive network
media gateway, network access storage, set-top box,
automotive, Internet access, industrial automation, image
detection/analysis, and electronic/medical instrumentation
markets. With its successful foundation in the
automotive/telematics market via the mobileGT™ alliance
and platforms, all markets can now enjoy extended temperature,
automotive qualification, and life cycles typically demanded
in that industry. A solid choice of Real Time Operating
Systems (RTOSs) and development boards with Board Support
Packages (BSPs) provides users with a complete and flexible
set of solutions.
Product Highlights
The MPC5200 is based on a 400 MHz MPC603e PowerPC core with
an integrated double precision Floating Point Unit (FPU) that
is qualified at -40 to 85 degrees C. The MPC5200 was designed
for fast data throughput and processing. The integrated
BestComm DMA controller offloads the main MPC603e core from
I/O intensive data transfers. An integrated Double Data Rate
(DDR) memory controller accelerates data access with an
effective memory bus speed of 266 MHz. A high-speed PCI
interface backed by the BestComm DMA controller and DDR memory
support enables high-speed data transfers in and out of the
MPC5200. The MPC5200 is manufactured in 0.13 micron
technology. Lead (Pb) free versions of the packages will be
available 01/05.

MPC5200 Evaluation and Development
Packages
Freescale offers two different evaluation and development
packages for the MPC5200 processor. The Lite5200™ Evaluation
Board (EVB) is a classic, stand-alone evaluation board. The
Total5200™ Development Platform is a complete, self-contained
system, which includes graphics and audio support and is
suitable for system prototyping with little or no additional
hardware. Depending on a design team's size and specific
needs, they may consider using a combination of these
platforms for their design efforts.
The Lite5200 EVB is available in two different kits. The
CWMPCEVB5200 Lite5200 EVB kit contains a variety of different
evaluation software from several vendors, including BSPs for
ARC™ Precise/MQX, Green Hills Software™ INTEGRITY®,
Metrowerks® Linux® and OSEK Turbo®, MontaVista® Linux®, QSSL
QNX®, and Wind River® VxWorks®. If you are using the ARC™
Precise/MQX implementation, you may order the CWMGTMQXDS
Lite5200 EVB Kit with the ARC™ BSP pre-loaded on the board.
The Total5200 Development Platform includes a 30-day
evaluation copy of the QNX® SDK and Momentics® IDE along with
a complete BSP for the Total5200. A complete BSP for
Metrowerks Linux may be downloaded at www.metrowerks.com. A
BSP for Green Hills Software INTEGRITY may also be obtained
directly from Green Hills Software®.
