In the process of learning, analyzing works that are well constructed and then trying to recreate those or similar before moving on to synthesize your own unique work is one of the best ways to learn aspects involved in the processes being studied.

Choose a scene from either Out of the Past or The Last Picture Show to analyze and then recreate, shot for shot, working as a class. Choose positions from standard film-industry workflow to execute the project. Rotate these so that everyone gets a chance to work as director of photography for at least a couple shots.

Monochrome cinematography is one of the best ways to practice composition, lighting, and value before moving on to color which complicates things. Aim to recreate the levels, contrast, framing, movements, and cuts as best you can.

You may choose to play the roles, ask for volunteers from DPA, or cast externally.
