Drawing from life is vital to my work...it is the foundation to all that I do. Animation, sketching, composition, rigging, staging, posing, silhouette....it all stems from observing life. I find myself with a newsprint pad, sketch book, or even scrap paper and a crayon and I feverishly try to capture the energy and line of life. It strengthens my motor skills and critical observation. I find when I don't spend at least one day a week, I get rusty...and getting rusty in my field is unacceptable. I didn't always find drawing a pleasure...funny enough it was a professor in college who turned me off. I forced to draw big and with hard charcoal. When I had ambition to enter the world of Disney...I realized that I wasn't going anywhere without a great life drawing portfolio. Once I landed in Seattle, I found there where drawing groups almost everynight and day. That's when I found the passion and artistic companionship that has given me passion to draw. I hope to keep my routine going, though it's quite a challenge when you teach art...ironically it should be easier. |
